Whirlpool Washer Error Codes

What each code on a Whirlpool washer display means, what you can safely check yourself, and when it needs a technician. Codes differ between model years: the list for your exact model is on the sticker inside the door or lid, or in the manual.

First, for any code: unplug the washer for one minute (or switch off its breaker) and start a short cycle. If the code comes back, use the table below.

CodeWhat it meansWhat to check
F8E1 / LFLong fill — not enough water in time.Open the water valves, check hose screens and household pressure.
F9E1 / F21 / LDLong drain — water not pumped out in time.Check the drain hose and standpipe; clean the pump filter on front-loaders.
F5E2Lid or door lock failed to lock.Make sure nothing blocks the lid/door; repeated codes mean the lock assembly.
F5E1Lid or door switch fault.Needs a switch check.
F5E3Lid or door lock failed to unlock.Unplug for a minute; if the door stays locked, the lock assembly.
F7E1Motor/basket speed problem — basket will not turn.Remove an oversized load; repeated codes need a technician.
F3E1Pressure (water level) sensor fault.Needs a sensor and hose check.
F1E1 / F01Main control board fault.Unplug for five minutes; if it returns, the board.
uLUnbalanced load.Redistribute the load and level the washer.
Sd / SudToo many suds.HE detergent, less of it; run a rinse.

When to call a technician
